What our guests have to say about Kosi Forest Lodge

We are basking in the glowing feedback from our guests at Kosi Forest Lodge. This is what they have to say about their experience of our thatched tented camp set in a sand forest in Northern KwaZulu-Natal. The reviews are from independent travel review site Tripadvisor:

What a fantastic place
Ilana, Chris and George (the guide) you all really made it a pleasurable experience.

The rooms are exclusive tented units and each one has an outside shower and bath, which was fantastic. They were very comfortable and totally private. The rooms don’t have electricity but the lamps and candles make the place.
The walk ways to your rooms are via tunnels through the trees with lanterns burning all the way through to your room.
Then George, the guide, took us on a walk and a boat ride through the forests and via all the lakes, he is interesting and very knowledgeable. The boat trip is a must when you are there.
Then the FOOD well we were over the moon, Chris this just made it for my wife and I; fresh ideas and fantastic food, absolutely unbelievable.
Ilana thank you for taking care of us, from the minute we arrived until the final drink before bed.

Thank you, we will be back.

Perfect balance

We arrived having expected no electricity and a rustic experience. What we found was a perfect balance between rustic and creature comforts. And they are eco-friendly.
The staff were very helpful and friendly and went out of their way to ensure that we had a happy visit. The guides were particularly good, not only with their knowledge of the flora and fauna, but also the local history and stories. The food was good – we really need their recipe for the courgette soup – such a pleasure to be able to taste the components without having them disguised with overpowering sauces etc. A lovely touch was having the salad dressing made at the table.

A chocolate on the pillow each night made a sweet end to a happy day.

Beautiful lodge away from mass tourism:

We arrived with absolutely no expectations and were blown away. The Lodge is nicely tucked away in the thick forest of Kosi Bay and basically the last stop before Mozambique. We were offered to join the forest walk in the afternoon which was highly informative and entertaining. Due to the fact that our guide grew up in the area, we were able to learn a lot about the plants and trees around us.
We loved our dinner, which they set up privately and away from the families. We had our own bonfire and they even brought us a birthday cake as this was a birthday trip.

The following day we joined a boat cruise which took us to the complex lake system close by. What a lovely area, we really enjoyed our time here to the fullest. Thank you for your hospitality, we will try to come back as soon as possible!

Perfect setup!

This place rates as one of my favourite places in South Africa. It’s hidden in the sand dunes of the Maputaland Reserve and only has 8 thatched roofed safari huts which are privately secluded throughout the bush. The experiences we had here were remarkable: a boat trip out onto the surrounding World Heritage Listed lake system; a walk to the Indian Ocean where we swam; canoeing up secluded waterways. All led by excellent local guides who grew up in the area and know EVERYTHING about the wildlife and the bush. I saw my first ever Palm Nut Vulture on one of our walks – what a remarkably beautiful bird……….

Each tent has its own internal and external bathroom. How they manage to get instantaneous hot water to each shower head is remarkable. Beds are turned down each night and hot water bottles placed in them without you even knowing who did it! The meals and hospitality left nothing to be desired and the staff were attentive to our every need. For our special farewell dinner the staff set up a trail of candles to a dining table set up under the full moon beside a fireplace – remarkable and unforgettable.

Most importantly this place is run and staffed by the local community. When you stay here your money goes back into the community which is very important in this poor part of Kwa Zulu Natal. Blessing (that’s his name) is the manager. He’s a jolly, thoughtful and gentle fellow who helped build the place many years ago and finally ended up managing it. There is nothing Blessing misses when it comes to caring for his guests (and his staff methinks!)

One special thing to do while you are there is have sundowners beside the pool looking over the lake system with the Hippos grunting nearby and if they don’t grunt Blessing will give you a perfect rendition of the sound!

Kosi Forest Lodge ticks ALL the boxes and creates a few new ones!. Everything is perfect.
